Mary's father was Archibald Hewitt and her mother was Janet White Robertson. Her maternal grandparents were David Robertson and Mary Eaglesome Smith Frew. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, James, Archibald, William, Jennie, Maggie, Dora and Alice. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 58 in 1949 in Glasgow.
