John's father was George Happell and his mother was Margaret Smith Savage. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Hugh, George, David, Francis and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 78 on May 1st, 1963 in Florida.³⁴
