David's father was George Happell and his mother was Margaret Smith Savage. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Hugh, John, George, Francis and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 74 in 1966 in Kilmarnock.
