Margaret's father was George Happell and her mother was Margaret Smith Savage. Her maternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. She had six brothers named William, Hugh, John, George, David and Francis. She was the third youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 80 in 1969 in Glasgow.³
