Francis' father was George Happell and his mother was Margaret Smith Savage. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Hugh, John, George, David and Margaret. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 49 in 1944 in Springburn.
