John was born on February 25th, 1873 in Glasgow.¹²

John's father was James Fyfe and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Hamilton. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Hamilton and Catherine Ferguson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Samuel, Kate, Jessie, Maggie and Helen. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 31 on December 21st, 1904 in Auckland.³
