William's father was William Shaw Cree and his mother was Agnes Bryan Munachen. His maternal grandparents were William Munachen and Catherine Robertson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, George, James, Euphemia, Andrew, Peter, Agnes and Kate. He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Peter. He died at the age of 48 in 1948.
