Andrew's father was William Shaw Cree and his mother was Agnes Bryan Munachen. His maternal grandparents were William Munachen and Catherine Robertson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, John, George, James, Euphemia, Peter, Agnes and Kate. He was the second youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Peter. He died at the age of 63 in 1974 in Ayr.
