Catherine, known as Kate, was born in 1899 in Ayr.

Kate's father was William Shaw Cree and her mother was Agnes Bryan Munachen. Her maternal grandparents were William Munachen and Catherine Robertson. She had seven brothers and a sister, named William, John, George, James, Euphemia, Andrew, Peter and Agnes. She was the second oldest of the nine children. She had a half-brother named Peter. She died at the age of 93 in 1992 in Ayr.¹
