Janet's father was James Brown and her mother was Marion Gibb. Her maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, George, James, Archibald, Helen, Elizabeth, Jessie and Marion. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
