Elizabeth's father was James Brown and her mother was Marion Gibb. Her maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, George, James, Archibald, Helen, Janet, Jessie and Marion. She was the third oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 67 in 1918 in Edinburgh.
