Christina's father was Thomas Brown and her mother was Janet Johnston. Her maternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Andrew, David, James, Ann, Anna, Julia and Elizabeth. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children. She died at the age of 4 in 1877 in Portobello.
