William's father was Dalrymple Bowman and his mother was Jane Taylor.  His maternal grandparents were Andrew Taylor and Ann Scoffield. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Robert, George, Helen, David, Hugh, Dalrymple, Joseph, Janet, Annie and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.  He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, Consumption; 2 years, at the age of 21 on August 21st, 1866 in Riccarton.
