David's father was Dalrymple Bowman and his mother was Jane Taylor.  His maternal grandparents were Andrew Taylor and Ann Scoffield. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named William, Andrew, Robert, George, Helen, Hugh, Dalrymple, Joseph, Janet, Annie and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.  He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, Chronic disease of Lungs several weeks, at the age of 3 on March 3rd, 1864 in Riccarton.
