Margaret was born about 1356 in Barony of Stafford, Staffordshire, England. Margaret's father was Hugh Stafford and her mother was Philippa De Beauchamp. Her paternal grandparents were Ralph De Stafford and Margaret De Audley; her maternal grandparents were Thomas De Beauchamp and Katherine Mortimer. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Ralph, Thomas, William, Edmund, Humphrey, Hugh, Anne, Joane and Catharine. She was the second oldest of the ten children.
