Her paternal grandparents were Milton Giles and Mary Ladd Majors; her maternal grandfather is James F. McCowen and her maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Manly. She had three brothers and six sisters, named James Milton, Noble M., John Irwin, Mary Elizabeth, Laudie Eldora, Henry Francis, Joe Annie, Rosie Lynn and Lula May.
