His paternal grandparents were Payn de Tybotot and Agnes (Anne) de Ros; his maternal grandparents were Bartholomew V de Badlesmere and Margaret de Clare. He had a brother named John. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Payn II, John, Thomas, Robert, Isabel, Elizabeth, Margaret and Maud.
