Eleanor was born about 1280.  Eleanor's father was Richard the Red Earl de Burgh and her mother was Hawise de Burgh.  Her paternal grandparents were Walter de Burgh and Aveline FitzJohn; her maternal grandparents were John de Burgh and Cecily de Baliol. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Edmund, John, Elizabeth, Aveline, Katherine, Matilda and Joan.  She is the oldest of the eight children.

‌Eleanor and Thomas V were married in a religious ceremony.  They had two sons and two daughters, named John, Thomas VI, Elizabeth and Joan.
