Thomas was born in 1794 in Surry County,North Carolina. Thomas' father was Samuel Gentry and his mother was Sarah Brock. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Gentry and Agnes Shelton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Shelton, Arthur, Nancy, Sarah (Sally), Susannah and Elizabeth. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Matthew, Joseph, James, William, Agnes and Daughter.-
