Samuel R was born about 1811. Samuel R's father was David Gwin and his mother was Violet Crawford. His paternal grandparents were Robert Gwin and Jane Or Jean Kinkead. He had a brother and five sisters, named David Sitlington, Isabella, Margaret, Rachel Viola, Susan Henderson and Salley. He was the youngest of the seven children. He had four half-brothers and five half-sisters, named John, James, Robert Moses, John, Nancy, Mary Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah.
