Her paternal grandparents were Robert Gwin and Jane Or Jean Kinkead; her maternal grandparents were James Carlisle and Nancy Rachael Campbell. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Robert Moses, John, Nancy, Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She had two half-brothers and five half-sisters, named David Sitlington, Samuel R, Isabella, Margaret, Rachel Viola, Susan Henderson and Salley.-
