Mary was born on February 14th, 1921 in Monroe County, Indiana. Mary's father was Oliver Carmie Deckard and her mother was Ola Mae Shields. Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Deckard and Phoebe Fleetwood; her maternal grandparents were David Thomas Shields and Sarah Frances Mize. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Russell, Paul A., Oliver Elmo, Rosalie and Arda Frances. She was the second youngest of the six children.-
