Thomas de was born in 1278.1 Thomas de's father was Hugh de Courtenay and his mother was Eleanor le Despencer. His paternal grandparents were John de Courtenay and Isabel de Vere; his maternal grandparents were Hugh II le Despencer and Aliva Bassett. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Hugh II de, Philip de, John de, Robert de, Eleanor, Margaret de, Avelina Ada' de, Isabel de, Egeline de and Alice de.
