Henry was born on April 30th, 1812 in Petworth and his baptism took place there on May 24th, 1812.^1 2

Henry's father was William Steer and his mother was Elizabeth Howick.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Osborn. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Robert, George, Edward, Charles, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 85 in 1897.
