George was born in 1816 and his baptism took place on March 31st, 1816 in Petworth.1  George's father was William Steer and his mother was Elizabeth Howick.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Osborn. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Henry, Robert, Edward, Charles, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.  He was the third youngest of the eleven children.
