Alice was born in September 1857 in Horwich.¹

Alice's father was John Longworth and her mother was Mary Ann Wright. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Longworth and Catherine Mather. She had three sisters named Eliza, Nancy and Eleanor. She was the oldest of the four children.
