Alfred was born on February 21st, 1909 in Neston.

Alfred's father was Frederick (Fred) Woodward and his mother was Lilian Pearson. His paternal grandparents were John Woodward and Ellen Conway. He had a brother named George. He was the older of the two children. He died at the age of 95 on September 21st, 2004 in British Columbia.¹
