Mary was born in December 1859 in Manchester.1  Mary's father was Thomas Wolfendale and her mother was Ann Allen.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Allen and Jane. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Charles, Margaret and Amelia.  She was the youngest of the six known children.
