Richard was born in 1856 in Blackrod.¹ Richard's father was Robert Wilson and his mother was Elizabeth Mather. His maternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Alice Makinson. He had two sisters named Agnes and Margaret. He was the oldest of the three children.
