Alice was born in 1847 in Rainford and her baptism took place there on June 13th, 1847.¹

Alice's father was Thomas Whalley and her mother was Alice Heyes. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Whalley and Ellen Fyles; her maternal grandparents were James Heyes and Catherine Birch. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, Catherine and Ellen. She was the youngest of the five known children.
