William's father was William Tomlinson and his mother was Ann Harding.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Randle, John, Randle, Sarah and Phebe.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 79 in October 1919 in London.²
