John was born in September 1846 in West Derby.1  John's father was William Tomlinson and his mother was Ann Harding.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Randle, Randle, Sarah and Phebe.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
