Emma's father was William Tomlinson and her mother was Mary Ann Barnes. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Tomlinson and Ann Bolton; her maternal grandparents were William Barnes and Ellen. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Richard, William, Ann, Sarah, Charlotte, Mary and Maggie. She was the third oldest of the nine children. She died at 5 months old in December 1874 in Bolton. Her burial was on December 20th, 1874 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.³¹
