Ann's father was William Taylor and her mother was Mary Walmsley. Her maternal grandparents were John Walmsley and Alice Mather. She had a brother and two sisters, named John, Ann and Alice. She was the second oldest of the four children.

- In 1851, Ann (9) was with her parents William and Mary Taylor (both 37) at 13 Back John Street, W Bolton.
  
  In 1861, Ann, 19, step-daughter was living with mother Mary and step-father George Astin (or Austin).
