Sarah was born in June 1845 in Saddleworth.1  Sarah's father was John Schofield and her mother was Ann (Sarah) Sandiford.  Her paternal grandparents were Noah Schofield and Mary Lees. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Charles, Joseph, James, Maria and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
