Maria was born in 1855 in Saddleworth.1  Maria's father was John Schofield and her mother was Ann (Sarah) Sandiford.  Her paternal grandparents were Noah Schofield and Mary Lees. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Charles, Joseph, James, Sarah and Mary.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
