Joseph was born in 1851 in Saddleworth.1  Joseph's father was John Schofield and his mother was Ann (Sarah) Sandiford.  His paternal grandparents were Noah Schofield and Mary Lees. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Charles, James, Sarah, Maria and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
