Charles was born in 1848 in Saddleworth.1  Charles' father was John Schofield and his mother was Ann (Sarah) Sandiford.  His paternal grandparents were Noah Schofield and Mary Lees. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Joseph, James, Sarah, Maria and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
