John's father was John Schofield and his mother was Ann (Sarah) Sandiford.  His paternal grandparents were Noah Schofield and Mary Lees. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Joseph, James, Sarah, Maria and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 78 in September 1921 in Saddleworth.²
