Ernest's father was William Henry Schofield and his mother was Ellen Buckley. His maternal grandparents were Benjamin Buckley and Patience (Patricia) Oldham. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Willie, James, Beatie and Ellenor. He was the oldest of the five children.
