William was born on November 3rd, 1839 in Walmersley and his baptism took place on March 25th, 1843 in Bury.1 2  William's father was James Robinson and his mother was Rachel Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, Benjamin, Mary and Rachel.  He was the oldest of the six children.
