John was born on February 10th, 1843 in Walmersley and his baptism took place on March 25th, 1843.1  John's father was James Robinson and his mother was Rachel Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Joseph, Benjamin, Mary and Rachel.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
