Richard was born in June 1899 in Little Neston.¹

Richard's father was Ellis Roberts and his mother was Ann (Annie) Jellicoe. His maternal grandparents were Edward Jellicoe and Jane Woodward. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ellis, Edward, Job, Annie, Sarah and Emily. He was the youngest of the seven children.
