Ellis' father was Ellis Roberts and his mother was Ann (Annie) Jellicoe. His maternal grandparents were Edward Jellicoe and Jane Woodward. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Edward, Job, Richard, Annie, Sarah and Emily. He was the oldest of the seven children.
