Hugh's father was Thomas Riding and his mother was Jane Walsh. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Jonathan, Sarah, Peggy, Catherine, Ellen and Jenny. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 80 on April 9th, 1864 in Adlington.³
