John's father was George Rhodes and his mother was Mary Timmis.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Timmis and Mary Hall. He had two brothers and a sister, named Charles, George and Anne.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 57 on April 8th, 1866 in Stoke upon Trent.²
