Charles' father was John Rhodes and his mother was Lavinia Ridley. His paternal grandparents were George Rhodes and Mary Timmis. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Sarah, Harriet and Fanny. He was the third oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Joseph, George, Martha and Marina.
