Sarah was born in June 1891 in Bolton.1  Sarah's father was Frederick Thomas Parkinson and her mother was Eliza Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. She had four brothers and three sisters, named James, Robert, Thomas, Fred, Ethel, Lily and Hilda.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
