Robert's father was John Cunliffe and his mother was Eliza Mather. He had six brothers and a sister, named James, John, James, James, George, William and Alice. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 42 in August 1885 in Bolton. His burial was on August 8th, 1885 in Bolton.²³
