John's father was John Cunliffe and his mother was Eliza Mather.  Richard Booth and Nanny (Nancy) Mather were his grandparents through his mother's adoption. He had six brothers and a sister, named Robert, James, James, James, George, William and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 16 in 1864 in Little Bolton.¹
